The Sutton North seat had traditionally been safe Labour, however Labour's grip on the seat was smashed as the Lib Dem candidate Jason Zadrozny romped home with 1979 votes whilst Labour took just 435. Tue 30th Jan 2007: East Midlands MEP Supports World Action Against Climate Change on February 1st, 2007. Bill Newton Dunn, LibDem MEP for the East Midlands is pledging his support for a worldwide event highlighting climate change. On Thursday 1st February at 6.55p.m. (GMT) millions of people across the globe will switch off their lights, computers, televisions and other appliances to observe a five minute silence. The aim of the event is to raise awareness among our neighbours, politicians and the media about the energy wasted daily - ahead of publication of the U.N.'s latest report on climate change the next day. The Mayor of Paris has even agreed to switch off the Eiffel Tower's lights! Sun 14th Jan 2007: Liberal Democrats select candidate for Derby North. The Liberal Democrats have selected local councillor, Lucy Care to be their Parliamentary Spokesperson for the new Derby North constituency. Tue 9th Jan 2007: Local MEP launches new website aimed at helping East Midlanders protect their personal data. Bill Newton Dunn, Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for the East Midlands, today launches his new website www.protectyourpersonaldata.eu The website contains guidance about what to do to ensure that the large quantities of data which firms and government collect on individuals is accurate, how to correct the data when there are inaccuracies, how to prevent misuse of data, etc. There is advice about preventing identity theft and steps to take to reduce junk mail, as well as a section which explains how to view your credit report, something which Bill recommends everybody do once a year to check for irregularities. Sat 9th Dec 2006: East Midlands MEP calls for a European FBI. Bill Newton Dunn, Lib Dem MEP for the East Midlands, in conjunction with the European Movement, publishes a paper which calls for the establishment of a European Federal Police Organisation to fight against organised crime in Europe.
